Week 11 Story: Redemption

Kali (Pinterest)

Redemption

Ashwatthama continued to wonder the desolate wasteland.  His thoughts always return to past events that occurred over a millennium ago.  The unforgivable actions he committed against the people he loved replay in his mind.  At last he releases a gut-wrenching scream to the heavens, “I was not always like this.  Once I was good and kind.  The war twisted me, I did not act like I normally would.”

A bright orb of light appeared before Ashwatthama.  Out of stepped a great tiger with the mighty Durga astride it.  With an imperious glance at Ashwatthama, the great goddess stated, “I to have fought in countless wars over the ages.  However, not once in the heat of battle have I ever done anything that I am ashamed of later.  Ashwatthama, son of Drona, be honest with me.  Were you truly a good person before the war?”

“I had friends and loved ones.  I trained under my father with the Pandavas and the Kauravas before everything fell apart,” said Ashwatthama.

“That was what you did, not who you were at the time.  Be honest with yourself.  Be brave enough to admit your faults.  It is the only way you can ever move on,” replied Durga.

“No! I was petty and weak!  I was jealous of my father’s relationship with Arjuna.  I felt like a second-rate warrior compared to Arjuna and Bhima,” answered Ashwatthama.

“Now we are getting somewhere.  It feels good to be true to yourself.  If you did that from the beginning perhaps you would not have been cursed of all eternity.  Do you remember what choice you made that started your downfall?”  said Durga.

“Yes, I should have fought with the Pandavas.  In my heart I knew they were in the right.  I just could not abandon my father,” said Ashwatthama.

“I warn you, one more false statement like that, and I will leave.  You can continue to wander the land cursed until the end of days.  Is that what you want?”

“No, please stay!”

“Fine,” replied Durga, “Now answer the question.”
“I wanted to prove that I was a better warrior than Arjuna,” answered Ashwatthama.

“That is the answer I was waiting to hear.  Answer my next question honestly and in no uncertain terms.  After your father died and the war ended; why did you not surrender in peace?” asked Durga.

“Because I had nothing left.  I had no family, no home.  The Pandavas took everything from me.  All I had to cling to was my rage, and my desire for revenge.  I wanted them to know what it feels like when everything you ever loved is destroyed right in front of your eyes!”

“So, you felt justified in your actions against the Pandava family?” asked Durga.

“Of course not!  My quest for revenge turned me into a monster.  An evil man who killed innocent children while they slept.  I killed Arjuna’s grandchild while it was still in the womb.  Actions like that can never be justified,” said Ashwatthama.  With a heavy sigh, and a defeated posture, Ashwatthama whispered,” It was not the war that twisted me.  I did this to myself.  I deserve this curse.  Leave me great goddess, I do not deserve your attention.  However, I must thank you.  Until now I have never taken responsibility for my own actions.  It was talking to you that finally made me see things clearly.”

A brilliant flash of red light surrounded Durga, and in an instant she was gone.  In her place stood the awe inspiring, fear inducing Kali.  When her fearsome gaze made eye contact with Ashwatthama; he fell to his knees.

“I am the dark blue night.  I am creation and destruction.  I am the divine protector who grants moksha.  It is I alone who has the power grant liberation form this life, and all incarnations.  I am Kali!” said Kali.  As she strode toward Ashwatthama she continued, “Ashwatthama, your curse has served its purpose.  You have admitted your faults.  It is time for you to take the next step.  I grant you a release of the life and death cycle.  Be at peace Ashwatthama.”

Still on his knees Ashwatthama gazed adoringly at Kali, with tears in his eyes.  He said,” Thank you, divine goddess, you honor me.”   With that Kali swung her sword and gave Ashwatthama a warrior’s death.

Author’s Note
This story is loosely based on The Kaurava Empire:Volume 2 The Vengeance of Ashwatthama graphic novel.  It was written by Jason Quinn, with art work by Sachin Nagar the graphic novel is based on the Mahabharata.  It describes the events before, during, and after he war from the perspective of Ashwatthama.  It is all flashbacks that he tells Governor Aiken, who he saved from an attack.  Conversation occurs thousands of years after the great war.  Governor Aiken passes judgment, saying the slaughter of children is unforgivable.  She leaves Ashwatthama stranded on the planet.  It tells how war can twist person and make them do unforgivable things.  It is a cautionary tale of the evil actions war can cause.

My story starts at the end of the graphic novel.  I felt like Ashwatthama’s story was not over.  In the epics I read in this class if a demon did what Ashwatthama did they would be killed by a hero.  Since the gods cursed him with immortality I thought that they should eventually end the curse.  So, the whole point of my story was to get Ashwatthama accept his guilt.  Then he would get peace through death.  I chose Durga and Kali for several reasons.  One, they are the same goddess.  Two, both are awesome.  Three, Kali has the power to free a soul from the reincarnation cycle.  Four, according to Kali’s Wikipedia page she appears in the Mahabharata and interacts with Drona and Ashwatthama during the war.  Although I have not read that version.  I thought it would work well for them to meet in my story.

Wikipedia Trail: from Halloween to A Midsummer Night's Dream

Happy Halloween! (Pixabay)

Halloween
It is a no big surprise why I chose Halloween as a topic for this post.  It is one of my favorite holidays.  Who does not like bobbing for apples, going to a haunted warehouse.  Some times I wish I was still young enough to go trick-or-treating.  However, that does not stop my from dressing up.

Trick-or-treating
So to night is cold and it is raining.  So I have not had a lot of trick-or-treaters.  The people I work with will be happy because they get all the left over candy.  Apparently, trick-or-treating became popular in the United States in the late 1920s.  Although it did slow down during World War 2 because of the sugar rationing.

William Shakespeare
Shakespeare mentions All Hallows Tide, which is an older more religious version of the modern day Halloween.  He is without a doubt one of my favorite writers.  St. Crispin's Day speech from Henry V is one of the most powerful and inspiring speeches I have ever heard.

A Midsummer Night's Dream
This is my favorite Shakespeare plays.  It is a fun and light hearted comedy.  It was written in 1595 or 1596, which is early in his career.  It has one of best characters ever, a fairy named Robin Goodfellow (Puck).  His best scene is at the where he basically tells the audience if they did not like the play, perhaps it was just a dream.

Wikipedia Trail: from Orion to Harry Belafonte

Harry Belafonte in 1969 (Wikimedia Commons)

Orion (constellation)
I chose to start with Orion because it is my favorite constellation.  Many different cultures have names and meanings attached to Orion, especially his belt.  The Rig Veda refers to Orion as Mriga or the Deer.  Spain and most of Latin America call the belt Las Tres Marías or The Three Marys.  The Lakota call the belt Tayamnicankhu or spine of a bison.

Betelgeuse
Betelgeuse is a star in the Orion constellation.  It is also called Alpha Orionis.  Betelgeuse is a red super-giant.  It is cool and bright.  It also pulsates so it's mass changes with time.  Also, it is the name of the main character from Beetlejuice.

Beetlejuice
This is one of my favorite movies of all time.  It is a comedy-fantasy directed by Tim Burton released in 1988.  Michael Keaton starred as the ghost Betelgeuse also called Beetlejuice.  This movie also features one of my favorite singer/songwriters  Harry Belafonte.

Harry Belafonte
I grew up listening to Harry Belafonte is a kid.  At age 91 Harry Belafonte has done so much more for the world than most people realize.  He was a major contributor in the Civil Rights Movement.  He bank rolled the Freedom Riders.  He was part of the Civil Rights March on Washington in 1963.  He was honorary co-chair for the Women's March on Washington held on 1-21-17.  A few months later in 2017, I had the privilege to hear him speak at OU Catlett Music Center.

Wikipedia Trail: Ludwig van Beethoven to Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica

Ludwig van Beethoven (Wikimedia Commons)

Ludwig van Beethoven
Beethoven is my favorite composer.  He was an extremely important figure in the transition of music classical to romantic.  The Ninth symphony is one of the most beautiful and powerful pieces of music ever written.  He identified with the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment.

Age of Enlightenment
Also known as the Age of Reason from 1715 to 1789.  This was when absolute monarchy and the power of the church declined.  The main ideas of this time were liberty, progress, constitutional government, and the separation of church and state.

Science in the Age of Enlightenment
This is when the first encyclopedias and dictionaries appeared.  The number of universities increased.  Science was introduced to the masses through public lectures and coffeehouses.  Reflecting telescopes lead to the discovery of planets.

Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica
Latin for Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, written by Sir Isaac Newton.  It is a collection of three books.  Sometimes it is shortened to Principia.  It includes important concepts such as Newton's laws of motion and Kepler's laws of planetary motion.

Wikipedia Trails: Vincent van Gogh to Edgar Degas

Cafe Terrace at Night (Wikimedia Commons)

Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh is my favorite artist.  He is considered a post-impressionist artist.  Despite struggling with mental illness most of his life he created 2,100 pieces of art.  Café Terrace at Night is my favorite.  Starry Nights is probably his most famous.

Claude Monet
He is one of the founders of Impressionism.  Most critics did not care for the style at the time.  One of them coined the term as an insult.  However, Monet and other artists like him took the word and made it their own.  Water Lilies and the Japanese Bridge is my favorite.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Another famous impressionists.  He was friends with Monet, and sometimes they would paint together.  They both discovered that shadows are a reflection of color, which is known as diffused reflection.  Luncheon of the Boating Party is my favorite.

Edgar Degas
He was considered a founder of the impressionism.  However, he did not care for the term, and preferred to be called a realist.  Originally he wanted to be a history painter.  I am glad he changed his mind because his art is so beautiful.  After the Bath, Woman Drying Her Nape is my favorite.

Tech Tip: Countdown Widget

I installed a New Years Eve countdown widget on my blog.

Tech Tip: Weather Widget

I added a weather widget to my side bar.

Tech Tip: Favicon

I just add a favicon to my blogger site.  It is Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album cover.  They are one of my all time favorite bands.

Wikipedia Trail: Santa Fe to Metropolitan Opera

Crosby Theater at the Santa Fe Opera House (Wikimedia Commons)

Santa Fe, New Mexico
I go to Santa Fe at least once a year.  People have lived there since 900 BCE.  The Spanish established a colony there in 1610.  It is the oldest capital in the United States.  Currently, there is a large artist community.

Santa Fe Opera
Every time I visit in the summer I go to the Santa Fe Opera at least one time during my stay.  It is a beautiful open air opera house.  There have been three theater in the same spot since it opened in 1957.  The season is during the summer.  This allows big name singers perform there during the off season at other houses.  Crosby Theater is the third theater, and it opened in 1998.

Figaro Systems
Figaro systems is a Santa Fe based company that provides electronic titling on the seat backs of chairs for opera houses.  The system provides libretto translations in eight different languages.  The system can be found in opera houses all over the world.  Some famous house include Santa Fe Opera, Metropolitan Opera House (New York City), and the Royal Opera House (London).

Metropolitan Opera
One of my bucket list items is to see an opera at the Metropolitan Opera House.  The Met was founded in 1880.  The current location is Lincoln Center in the upper west side of Manhattan.  It is a huge opera house.  It can seat 3,732 people, with an additional 245 people standing in the at the back of the main floor and top balcony.  During the off season the American Ballet Company uses the theater.

Wikipedia Trail: Reynolds Number to Tornado

Reynolds number is extremely important to aerospace engineer majors.  The point at which air flow over an airfoil (wing) transitions from laminar flow to turbulent flow is the Reynolds number.  In other words it is a ratio of inertial forces to viscous forces.  As far as airfoil testing is concerned sea level is best.  That way air can be treated as a liquid.

Sea level is the average level where the oceans meet the land.  This is important for aircraft because sea level and atmospheric pressure is used for the altimeter.  An altimeter uses sea level to estimate the altitude the aircraft is flying.  On the ground the atmospheric pressure  is 29.92 inHg (inches of mercury)

Also known as barometric pressure.  At sea level is 14.7 psi (pounds per square inch).  The higher in altitude, the lower the pressure.  Highest pressure is in Siberia.  Lowest pressure is in the middle of tropical cyclones or tornados.

A tornado is a column of rotating air between a cloud and the ground.  In the northern hemisphere they always rotate counter clockwise.  In the southern hemisphere they always rotate clockwise.  The Fujita scale is one of the more common rating scales for damage that a tornado causes.  A tornado family is when one storm cell forms more than one tornado.

The Battle Royale
The boy fought all the Deva's Ganas (attendants), Indra, Kartikeya (Shiva's son).  Furious that they attacked her son, Paravati summoned Durga and Kali.  Kali stood between the boy and others.  She swallowed of their weapons, and spit them back out at them.  Durga, in the form of lightening, destoryed the weapons.  The two Devi did not allow a single weapon to come near the boy.  The three of them defeated all of them.  Vishnu and and Shiva entered the fight.  Durga and Kali gave the boy all of their strength so that he could fight the two Deva.  The boy broke Shiva's bow with his club.  Vishnu broke the boys club with his discus.  The boy threw what was left at Vishnu, but Garuda (his mount) caught it.  Shiva from behind the boy's back decapitated the boy with his trident.

EC Reading Notes: Mahiravana

Mahiravana: A Magician Outwitted
Written By: Meera Ugra
Art Work By: Souren Roy

Back Story
This comic is part of the Ramayana.  However, it did not appear in the PDE version that I read.  Which is a shame because it has my favorite character Hanuman.  As an added bonus he also has new super powers!  Plus, Durga makes an appereance.  So, that is cool.  These events take place after Hanuman burns down Lanka, but before the final battle with Ravana.

The Exposition
Ravana calls Mahiravana for help.  Mahiravana is Ravana's son, a magician, and king of the underworld.  So, Mahiravana decides to help his dad by kidnapping Rama and Lakshmana.  He takes them to the underworld, and decides to sacrifice them to Durga.

Hanuman's Super Powers
  • can turn invisible
  • can turn into a fly
Hanuman and Durga Teamup
Hanuman (in fly form) asks Durga to help him save Rama and Lakshmana.  She says yes, because she has decided that Mahiravana should die.  First, she does not want the sacrifice.  Second, he is persecuting the noble and innocent.  She tells Hanuman the plan, and wants him to tell Rama and Lakshmana.  The brothers are taken to the temple.  Hanuman turns invisible and follows.  The brothers refuse to bow at the alter because they are royal, and don't know how.  So Mahiravana bows down to show them.  Hanuman takes the sacrificial sword, and decapitates Mahiravana on the alter.  The three men return to camp to continue their adventures.

Story Lab: TVTropes

TVTropes Logo (tvtropes.org)
What is a trope?
A trope tool writers use that is a story telling device or convention.  It is an easy way for writers to describe things that the reader will quickly understand.  Below are a few examples of tropes.

The One Steve Limit:
This is an omnipresent trope, or one that is used so much that the reader does not even notice it.  The trope says that no story should have two or more characters with the same or similar name.  For  example: If there is a Steve, then no other character will have the name Steve, Steven, Stephen, or even Stu.  This is considered a break from reality.  Think of a class room, there is usually a couple of people named Sara or Mike.

The Great Big Book of Everything
This is an "information desk" (exposition) trope.  The purpose of the book is to supply a character with knowledge at the right time in order to push the story forward.  It will always appear when needed by a character.  A good example is The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, it describes the entire universe in detail for Arthur.

All For Nothing
This is an older than feudalism trope.  According to TVTropes classification that means the trope has been around since the invention of the Greek alphabet (800 BC-467 AD).  This trope can be found on the Ramayana trope page.  Their example of all for nothing is Rama exiling Sita while pregnant with twins after he rescues her from Ravana.

EC Reading Notes: Saraswati

Saraswati Stories of the Goddess of Wisdom
Written By: Sanjana Kapur
Art Work By: Adarsh Achari

Birth of Saraswati

Version 1
After Brahma created the three worlds, his mind was at peace.  From his mind came Saraswati.  He was so captivated by her that every time she moved he grew another head to keep her in his sites.  After he grew five heads Saraswati asked Shiva for help.  He destroyed Brahma's fifth head.  Brahma apologized and asked Saraswati for guidance.  She gave him knowledge and married him.

Version 2
Saraswati was born from Brahma's mind.  She said he had to give her a place in the universe because she came from him.  He said she would exist in three forms.  Speech, to stay on the tip of everybody's tongue.  River, so she would exist on earth.  Goddess, to stay with Brahma because she is a part of him.

Saraswati's Image

She wears white to represent purity of thought.  Also, she wears blue accents to represent her river form and fluidity.  Her clothing is simple to show that wisdom and knowledge are beyond material wealth.

Saraswati Saves the World

At the request of the Gods, Saraswati keeps the world from burning.  In her river form she carries the Vadavagni (all consuming fire that destroys everything) to the ocean.  The area where her river meets the ocean is sacred.

So rise and slay your enemies.
Fear nothing, for you are my instrument alone.
By me they are killed for their own actions.
Put aside your ego.  Discard the 'I'.
It is not you who does anything, but the 'me' inside you.
Surrender your consciousness to me, make me your anchor.

Remember,
I will help you cross all obstacles.
It is only if you are arrogant that you will not find your way.
You refuse to fight because you are vain,
Although, you will have to.
Remember, he who treats pain and pleasure equal,
And is swayed by none,
Is dearest to me.

EC Reading Notes: Bheema and Hanuman

    Bheema and Hanuman
    Written By: Kamala Chandrakant
Art Work By: M. N. Nangare

    About the Comic

Honestly I am a little disappointed in the comic.  I am a huge fan of Hanuman.  So I read the comic just to see him interact with Bheema.  I was curious about what the comic book version was about.  I read the PDE versoin of the Mahabharata, and I like that version of meeting between Bheema and Hanuman.

So, the comic only had 8 pages out of 31 that had Bheema and Hanuman together.  The rest was about the Pandavas exile, and Bheema getting flowers for Draupadi.  Although, Bheema's son Ghatokacha made an appearance, that was interesting and random.

    Hanuman and Bheema Meet

    1. Hanuman wants to teach Bheema to be humble
    2. Hanuman scares Bheema by making a lot of loud noises that shook the mountain
    3. Hanuman plays a trick on Bheema by making his tail so heavy that Bheema could not move it
    4. Hanuman said that he would ride on Arjuna's flagstaff and roar to scare their enemies during battle

Wikipedia Trail: Working Time to Franklin D. Roosevelt

FDR Signing Social Security Act (Wikipedia)

    Working Time

So I chose this topic to start with because I currently work full time with the occasional mandatory overtime.  This week I have worked a total of 52 hours.  It is my personal opinion that 40 hours of work is more than enough.  The forty hour work week is a general trend of decreasing time spent at work.  Right now the United States ranks 14 in the world for average annual hours worked per worker at 1789 hours.

    Time-and-a-half

Time-and-a-half is what I get when I work over 40 hours in a week.  So on this paycheck I will have 12 hours of extra pay.  This started with the passing of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938.  All things considered, I would rather have slept in today, and not go to work.

Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938

This act did a lot for hourly workers.  It prevents child labor, started the 40 hour work week, a national minimum wage, and overtime pay.  Over the years Congress and the sitting President have increased the minimum wage.  This act was part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt"s New Deal.

    Franklin D. Roosevelt

President Roosevelt is probably on of the most important figures in our nations history.  He presided over the great depression and World War 2.  Major new deal legislation included the Fair Labor Standards Act, Social Security, Glass-Steagall Act, and Federal Deposit Insurance Commission.  He created the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1942, to help with strategic planning during World War 2.

Week 9 Story: Brawl at the Bar

    A Bar (Wikipedia)

Parvati had one of those days at work.  Murphy’s Law was in full affect, whatever could go wrong did.  For the last two hours of shift she kept repeating her mantra in her head; it is almost beer thirty.  This gave her the strength to power through to the end of shift.  As soon as she heard the bell signaling the end of shift, she jumped in her car and headed to the closest water hole, McNellie’s Ale House.

Parvati was a regular at McNellie’s.  In fact, she considered it her cheers.  It is where everybody knows her name.  She settled in at the bar and ordered her favorite beer, Moose Drool by Big Sky Brewery.  She was not even halfway done with her pint when three frat boys walked in and sat next to her.  The leader introduced himself as Shumbha, and his cronies Chanda and Munda.  She found them rude and crude.  All she wanted to do was enjoy her beer in peace, and not be harassed by three jerks.

In desperation she sent a text to her best friend Durga.  The 911 text was a plea for help, to get rid of the three frat boys.  Durga immediately responded and said she would be there in fifteen minutes.  When she arrived, she tried her best to shut down the frat boys’ advances.  After twenty minutes the three wastes of space did not get the point that the two ladies wanted nothing to do with them.  In fact, Shumbha said that if they invited one more friend then they could have three couples.

That was when Durga realized that the only way to end this was to text Kali.  Fortunately, Kali was just finishing up her jujitsu training session down the street.  It just so happens that Kali dominated her last mixed martial arts match.  She said she would take care of the oxygen stealers then the three girls would have dinner.  This made Parvati and Durga breath a sign of relief.

Not two minutes had passed when Kali strode into McNellie’s.  Kali had a presence that made everyone in the pub stop what they were doing and take notice of her.  Kali walked right up to the three frat boys and informed them that they had two choices.  One, they leave Parvati and Durga alone, or she would make them.

All three started to laugh and said they would like to see her try.  Kali bared her teeth in a wolfs grin, and said they just made a huge mistake.  Chanda and Munda were the closest to her and the easiest to dispatch.  In no less than three moves she had both men eating the hardwood floor.  Shumbha, taken aback by her ruthless efficiency said that she would have no such luck doing the same thing to him.  With a sneer Kali said she would not have too.  Out of nowhere, Durga grabbed Shumbha in a classic choke hold, and he passed out in forty-five seconds.

The three best friends looked down at the three unconscious men and admired their handy work.  Everyone in the bar cheered, because the three frat boys had caused trouble at McNellies’s time and time again.  The manager was so happy, he gave all three of them free food and drinks for the rest of the evening.  Parvati smiled and thought that her day was finally improving.

    Author’s Note
This story is based on the Amar Chitra Katha comic Tales ofDurga: Tales of the Mother Goddess.  Written by, Subba Rao, art by Souren Roy.  In the original comic Durga came out of Parvati’s body.  Durga fought Shumbha.  He was a powerful demon who kicked all the Gods out of heaven.  When Shumbha’s army attacked Durga she became so angry that Kali came out of Durga’s head.  Kali killed the army and Shumbha’s commanders Chanda and Munda.  Together Durga and Kali kill Shumbha.  Kali prevents his blood from being spilled, while Durga throws him to the ground from the sky.

For this story I focused on plot changes.  First, the goddesses are human and separate people.  I liked the idea of the events happening in a bar.  The reason is because most people have had an experience with that one obnoxious drunk person in a bar.  Also, since it is a modern day setting the ladies only beat up the three guys instead of killing them.
